Community Health Development, Inc

Ms. Mayela Castañon serves as Chief Executive Officer for Community Health Development, Inc. Prior to becoming CEO in December 2019, Ms. Castañon served as the organization’s Chief Financial Officer for over nineteen years. Ms. Castañon earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a major in Accounting and a minor in Economics, from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1993 while working full-time and raising two children. 

Ms. Castañon began her tenure as CEO shortly before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.  She successfully led CHDI through the unprecedented public health emergency by maintaining a firm vision of the health and safety of the agency’s patients and staff.

​While most health centers nationwide experienced large decreases in patients served because of the pandemic, CHDI experienced only minor decreases in 2020 and rebounded in 2021 to not only achieve pre-pandemic volumes but to garner five Community Health Quality Recognition (CHQR) badges from HRSA in August 2022.

Ms. Castañon’s commitment to ensuring CHDI delivers the highest level of quality health care to our communities is evident in the systems and processes she has put in place for the long-term viability of the agency.
